Sarmiento begs off Maguindanao

COMELEC Chairman Benjamin S. Abalos just announced that Commissioner Rene V. Sarmiento had asked to be relieved as Chairman of Task Force Maguindanao. Sarmiento cited health reasons.  “Preparing for the conduct of the special elections in Lanao del Sur, not to mention actually conducting the voting, counting and canvassing, were very draining,” Sarmiento  said.

Abalos, for his part, congratulated Sarmiento on the special elections in Lanao del Sur even as he named Sarmiento’s replacement on the Task Force. “Commissioner Sarmiento said that the canvassing is in progress and we are very happy about that.” To give Sarmiento the opportunity to rest, Abalos said, he “spoke with Commissioner Nicodemo T. Ferrer who has accepted the assignment.”

  1. from cagayan de oro here. i support what comm sarmiento did and i believe he’s doing a good job. but what exactly did he resign from? accdg to resolution 8060 (which, among others created stf lanao del sur), “the cic, armm shall designate the chairman and members of said task force and determine the specific duties and functions thereof.” maybe the reso has been amended so that sarmiento was supposed to chair the stf?

  2. Hi jessejoe. The Resolution you quoted – as you correctly observed – created TF LDS. Commissioner Sarmiento resigned from TF Maguindanao, which is a different task force, not covered by Reso 8060.
